La Mer The Oil Absorbing Lotion – Review + Photos

by Tavia

My experience with La Mer The Oil Absorbing Lotion began in December last year when I first start using it in combination with Oil Absorbing Tonic (review here).

These two products should win the Oscar for the best couple of the year for beauty products.

You can read all about the ingredients contained in this lotion and what I’ve experienced when I first used it, here in my preview.

What makes it my favorite face lotion is that it’s oil-free, oil-absorbing fast-penetrating formulation that hydrates, yet leaves a soft matte finish for hoursperfect for normal-to-oily and oily skins (like mine). If you are using it alongย  with the Oil Absorbing Tonic (200ml for $60.00) you will forget about an oily complexion in no time.

I’ve been struggling with sebum excess for years and although I’ve tried lighter creams that promised to keep my oiliness under control I could never find the right combination for my complexion.

Just to let you know, The Oil Absorbing Lotion is a lighter version of Creme de la Mer which I’ve also enjoyed using, so you will find the in this lotion the same ingredients that are contained in Creme de la Mer.

I have to admit I like the lighter version better, because the texture is lighter, non-greasy, smoother and faster absorbed by my skin. As La Mer says ” the texture provides freedom of choice for those who desire Creme de la Mer in lotion form for times when a creme may be too rich”.

Creme de la Mer worked great for me but it couldn’t control my oiliness as good as the lotion did. I’ve also tested Creme de la Mer during the cold season and now after trying the Oil Absorbing Lotion I’m convinced that this is more suitable for my skin needs. Creme de la Mer is to rich for me so I wouldn’t dare it to use it in the summer, but my curent solution is to use it as a night cream. I have to tell you that it works great –ย  Creme de la Mer does the night shift while the Oil Absorbing Lotion takes care of my skin during the day. Those of you with normal or dry complexion can enjoy Creme de la Mer all year long, day and night. ๐Ÿ™‚

The lotion came packed in a green box but as soon as you will take it out of the box you will see the 50 ml lotion in a white tube wit a cap, underneath where you can find a pump. As I said in my previous review on the Oil Absorbing Lotion, I love when face lotions came in tubes with pumps because is not only hygienic but you can get the exact amount of product. For me 2 half pumps are enough to apply all over my face.

My skin feels nourished, hydrated and has a nice natural glow. Because the sebum excess is reduced visibly (some because of the Oil Absorbing Tonic) breakouts don’t dare to appear as often as they use to, and even when they do appear they will go in a day or two leaving your skin with a healthy look ( no scars).

The price for the 50 ml lotion is $ 190.00. I assure you this is not a lotion that you will finish in 2 moths because you need only a small amount of product to apply on your face, so if you really want to treat your skin with a luxury lotion, here is one that will not make you regret buying it.

Usually luxury brands make products that can last for months and that’s why the price is higher than the usual products, but you can consider it as an investment in your skin appearance.

I can’t wait to try this lotion in summer when my skin tends to be a bit more oily. The summer season is really a challenge for my complexion since I don’t even use foundation or too much makeup since I can’t put up with the sebum excess.

How to apply

The procedure is the same as in Creme de la Mer case. After you’ve removed your makeup and cleaned your skin you need to warm a small amount between your fingertips to activate the broth and release your key ingredients. I instantly felt the soothing effects of the broth and a light warm sensation covered my skin. A pale pink color covered my cheeks but after a few minutes it went away. Then I realized the ingredients were released and started doing their job.

I smooth the lotion over my face, neck and even under my eye area.

The Oil Absorbing Lotion is available online at www.lamer.com, at select Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.

This product sounds wonderful, but $190? That’s a little too steep for me! I’m a big fan of L’Bel Paris’s Essential skincare line (but then again, I am a L’Bel rep, ha). It’s much more affordable yet still very effective. I like pairing the mattifying lotion toner (http://tinyurl.com/yks85a9), $18, with the purifying foam cleanser (http://tinyurl.com/ygt94ou), $19. This duo complements my oily skin, but it doesn’t dry out my face either. Plus, nice on my wallet too!

Hi Ashley! Have you ever tried La Mer’s products? Thanks for you suggestions but what kind of cream or lotion do you use after the purifying foam cleanser and lotion toner? I’m really satisfied with the Oil Absorbing Lotion, because other creams or lotions couldn’t control my oiliness even though before applying them I used products that were designed to absorb the oil. I think is very important to use also a lotion or cream that is designed for oily or combination complexion.

No, I’ve never tried La Mer’s products. Are most of them priced similarly? For me, the cost is prohibitive for this particular product…I can’t afford something like that.

To answer your question, after cleansing and toning, I usually follow up with the Prรฉventive moisturizing lotion (for oily skin: http://tinyurl.com/yb69v9e).

Well AShley! I would truly recommend to you their products. The Oil Absorbing Lotion is really great and unlike other products, this will last for a few good months. Their products are really concentrate and they usually last a lot more than normal products. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m really interested in trying both the Oil Absorbing Tonic and Oil Absorbing Lotion. I can’t use any products with Salicylic Acid but I can’t find the ingredients listed for these La Mer products online. Do you still have the package, and if so, do either of the products contain Salicylic Acid?

Thank you so much!

Hi Catherine! Thanks for your interest on my article and if you have an oily complexion or combination type I think you will love these products. I’m still using them, the Tonic lotion is more than half of the bottle after so many months. ๐Ÿ™‚ I think I still do have the package somewhere at home but I’m currently out of town. As soon as I will return home I will search for the packages and tell you what ingredients they contain. I hope I won’t forget but you can write me an email next week to remind me. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi again Catherine! I just got back home few days ago and I found the packaging and I’ve check the ingredients. There is no Salicylic Acid listed among the ingredients, but if you like I can take a close up photo of those listed ingredients and I can’t send it to u by email. Just let me know. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Tavia, a close up photo would be great! I want to make sure I am using something that I can use throughout pregnancy, and “they” say Salicylic Acid is a big no no.

Thanks again!

Hey there, I am willing to try this product next as I have always wanted to try La Mer products specifically The Oil Absorbing Lotion. Thank you so much for this review. As I read your review I come to realize that you are concerned with excessive sebum production. I use my Chanel’s Purete Ideale Serum and it really helps keep sebum production under control. I swear by it. So maybe you would interested in trying it. I hope all works well for you.

Hi, thanks for the review ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m trying to find out if the La Mer Oil Absorbing Lotion compares to the Gel Cream in terms of hydration? and whether it would be ok to use under the La Mer spf50 Fluid sunscreen

I have combo skin, which is flakey in parts but also gets oily and shiny by the afternoon, especially if i’m in the sun or get hot. I found the gel cream was one of the first moisturisers that gave me a glow and didn’t result in any shineyness, it actually kept the shine away all day. But I was still a little too dry

Now I’m using the La Mer SPF50 which has some moisturiser in it and it’s good but I’m tending toward the shiny face again

So I’m thinking the oil absorbing lotion + spf over the top could be a good combo?

Hi Janey! That would be a great combo indeed. I don’t know about your skin type but since I’m combination skin I prefer only La Mer Oil Absorbing Lotion and when I’m applying anything on top with SPF I like to dab a little loose power over it to prevent my face from shining. ๐Ÿ™‚ I absolutely love La Mer products and this lotion is the best I’ve ever tried.
